Want to make your own worm castings in your garage? All you need is one of those plastic tubs - been to Costco recently? These Red Wigglers (Eisenia foetida) will digest your organic kitchen scraps into black gold for your plants. They work silently, and will move from one scrumptious piece of melon skin to the wilted lettuce leaves then stretch for your leftover chili con carne with rice, beans, and all.
Starter Red Wigglers
Plastic tubs are best. While we love wood, so do these active munchers, who will literally eat their way out of a wood barn. Line the bottom and sides with strong cardboard, and then several layers of packaging cardboard. These will stop the bin from getting soggy. Red wigglers like aerobic conditions, and a lot of moisture. The cardboard will create the sweet spot of Not Too Wet, Not Too Dry. Paper waste from your shredder will create lots of those in-between spaces for the shy things to hide and lay their excellent eggs.
